Description

And welcome back to another semester of Critical Function. We are excited to announce a wonderful winter lineup! Our workshops begin next Thursday, January 30th at 3:00 to 5:00 PM in Innis 223E with a paper by CSI PhD Candidate Erin Mick and Petra Totten responding. Coffee and drinks will be served (we also welcome people to share their own baked goods).

The essay is called "Eulogies." To receive the paper please click this link and enter your name to receive the essay (please download it from there). Here is the abstract:

"This dissertation fragment lays the groundwork for the rest of the project, which braids together personal, creative, and scholarly modes of writing, by considering the form of the eulogy. I frame the eulogy as an invitation to a friendly encounter with Death, and claim that horror cinema (and indeed, perhaps the humanities writ-large) extends a similar invitation. To reflect on this, I pay special attention to The Haunting of Hill House (Flanagan, 2018) and The Strangers (Bertino, 2008), which I argue, like many horror films, operate around one simple thesis: everybody dies."
