The Cinema Studies Institute offers a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Cinema Studies. Both programs are dedicated to the critical study of cinema rather than training in filmmaking as a practice. More specifically, both programs synthesize history and theory, textual analysis and cultural study in order to engage with past and present configurations of cinema and related media.
The one-year M.A program is course-based and culminates in the option of a professional internship or a major research paper. The Ph.D. program involves a year and a half of coursework and the completion of a research-based dissertation. In both programs, a combination of core and elective courses provides students with the opportunity to engage with salient debates and questions within the field of cinema studies while also examining how that field contends with emerging disciplinary issues and new intermedial formats.
