The Cinema Studies Institute Statement on the CAUT Censure of U of T

The Cinema Studies Institute is honouring the censure placed upon the University of Toronto by the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT). During this time, we are cancelling all speaking engagements and events with outside guests. The assessment of whether any hiring processes will go forward will be guided by how such hires might support early-career scholars, scholars without permanent positions, and/or diversity goals. In keeping with the principles of academic freedom, we respect the right of each member of the Institute to choose how to negotiate the censure. The Institute affirms the University of Toronto’s stated purpose of “fostering an academic community in which the learning and scholarship of every member may flourish, with vigilant protection for individual human rights, and a resolute commitment to the principles of equal opportunity, equity, and justice.”
