University of Toronto Graduates

Students graduating from the Cinema Studies undergraduate program at the University of Toronto may be eligible for various fellowships and awards tenable at the MA level, including the Norman Jewison Fellowship. All Admitted Students

All students admitted to the Cinema Studies graduate program, regardless of where they studied for their undergraduate degree, are automatically considered for the following awards. Award amounts vary from year to year.

Award Conditions To be awarded for academic excellence to a student accepted into the graduate program of the Cinema Studies Institute at U of T. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate broad interest and documented study in related disciplines.

Award Conditions To be awarded to a PhD candidate engaged in Cinema Studies, based on academic excellence. Financial need will also be considered. 

External Awards and Fellowships

Please see the School of Graduate Studies Awards & Funding page for a comprehensive list of awards available. Students applying to our program are encouraged to apply for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) scholarship. Students currently in an MA program who wish to pursue further studies at the PhD level are also encouraged to apply.

  • Internal deadlines will be given below when available. This is a time-consuming process, and deadlines are firm. Please consult the Graduate Program Assistant in September if you wish to apply.
  • Students from other universities should inquire with their current departments, or contact the funding agencies directly (also in the case of alumni who are not currently registered at a university).

The CGS-D (Doctoral competition) deadline at the Cinema Studies Institute is 11 a.m. (ET), Monday, September 26, 2022 (deadline passed)

The CGS-M (Masters competition) deadline is 8 p.m. (ET), December 1, 2022. 

OGS

The School of Graduate Studies launches the on-line application form for the OGS application each academic year. Please review the on-line application form via the SGS Scholarships & Awards.

The University of Toronto OGS application will require that students provide the same supporting materials as has been included in previous OGS applications:

  • Two Academic Assessment reports (referees will be required to submit on-line)
  • Plan of study (approx. 500 words)
  • Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions (unofficial or student issued copies are permitted)
  • List of previous awards/publications/conferences/research experience

The OGS deadline for 2023 (both domestic and international) at the Cinema Studies Institute is March 30, 2023. 

Important note for students: This application will only be assessed at the University of Toronto. Students must submit an OGS application to each institution for which they are seeking admission. OGS awards are no longer transferrable by a student from one university to another.


Doctoral Completion Award

Graduate students who are no longer receiving the base funding package for PhD students (beyond Year 4), but within the time limit of their degree (6 years) may apply for the Doctoral Completion Award. You may obtain the Cinema Studies Institute application regulations and form from the Graduate Program Assistant).
