Description
‼️‼️GRAD SEMINAR‼️‼️ A TALK WITH SAM REIMER, PHD STUDENT 🛹 Skating Toronto, Cruising Space
What can gay male cruising teach us about skateboarding and the aesthetics of the skate videos? In this piece, I take as my starting point the fact that skateboarding and cruising frequently occupy the same public spaces and that their occupations of space are similarly deemed as delinquent and indecorous. In reading skating and cruising alongside each other, I consider how each theorizes a relationship to the public sphere that describes the act of moving through space as both erotic and homosocial. With a particular attention to spaces throughout Toronto, I argue that the scopic regime of the skate video—its use of consumer video technologies and its grounded voyeuristic gaze—affectively stages a homoerotic traversal of space.
